How is genomic DNA extracted?
Scientists and researchers can extract the genomic DNA from a sample of blood, a mouth swab, or a water bottle someone was drinking from. If we took a sample of blood and wanted to extract the genomic DNA we would be looking at lymphoid. This is because red blood cells have lost their nuclei and basically oxygen transporting machine. Extraction is actually quite simple and could be performed as a science experiment with the right equipment.Extraction of DNA always follows the same four steps.
1. Lysis of the cellular membrane.
2. Separation of proteins from nucleic acids. (Certain salt concentrations will allow proteins to precipitate and easily be removed)
3. Separation of RNA from DNA.
4. Recovery of high molecular weight DNA.
