The reasons for foodborne illness
Foods are very important because they provide the energy necessary for the body to function and nutrients to grow. However, to exploit them, must be clean, fresh and in good condition. In the environment, whether in the water, land or air, there are thousands of organisms so small they are not visible to the naked eye; some of these beings, called microorganisms can invade the body and cause foodborne illness. The microorganisms can be purchased to be near a sick person, either by breathing or swallowing food and liquids that have been contaminated. Food prepared at home, provides greater security because it made with fresh, washed and cooked in a kitchen and utensils clean. The most common foodborne illnesses that are transmitted by drinking or eating unclean or in poor condition are amoebiasis, typhoid and cholera. These diseases are spread directly through the mouth, when consuming food or drink contaminated by feces (stool). These conditions almost always start with a pain, usually in the stomach, loss of appetite and diarrhea.
Amebiasis is a common disease in children. Its targets are the children who sometimes forget to wash their hands after playing in the street or after going to the bathroom.
Cholera is much more serious and unlike typhoid or amoebiasis. people who are infected have diarrhea and frequent vomiting causing dehydration and if not addressed, may die in a few hours by as high fluid loss.
Raw seafood, such as oysters or shrimp may be contaminated with cholera bacteria, so should be eaten cooked, either fried or cooked.
The best way to prevent these diseases is to eat fresh, clean and well cooked, and always drink boiled or disinfected water.
