Video games have provided many scientific fields with a plethora of research opportunities, often providing researchers with valuable information relating to the psychology and physical attributes of people who play games.

Insight Into a Gamer’s Mind

As aforementioned, research of people who play video games have helped to provide valuable information to scientists. Gaming often requires interaction with other players, making decisions quickly, and intense thought. These types of studies allow scientists to gather useful information on how the mind reacts in these certain situations. Video games often allow people to be placed in specific situations, most of which may be not applicable in real life. This allows scientists to delve deeper into the mind by seeing how people react in these non-applicable situations. It provides new insight into the way people think, feel, and react when we reach certain desired or not desired outcomes in these situations. Player Interaction With Other Players

Video games have contributed to psychological science through the analysis of how players interact with other players. Depending on the type of game, a player may have a different psychological reaction to another player. For example, in a massively multi-player online role playing game, players may react to each other in a variety of different ways. If each player needs to complete a dungeon, they may choose to be friendly towards each other and work together in order to complete the task at hand. In contrast, if a player sees another play of an opposing faction, they may feel emotions of hatred and attempt to defeat the opposing player. Not only does this show how players interact with others in a given situation, but it also provided to science in a sense that players recognize symbols and or factions that are opposing and react negatively to them.

Critical Thinking and Decision Making

Through scientific observation, researchers have also deducted that people who play video games exhibit both critical thinking and decision making skills which are executed in a timely manner. Time is an important factor in any game, and it dictates what a player’s next move will be. For example, if a player is playing a first-person shooter video game and sees that his team needs help but there are also enemies approaching, the player must decide which is more important in very little time. They must analyze both the positives and the negatives of the outcomes they think will occur and decide on a course of action. This allows researchers to conduct experiments on how players decide what is most important to them, and how they came to that decision. These decisions are made rather quickly, so it is useful for researchers to know why and how the players reached this decision.

The contributions video games have made to science are vast and continue to provide useful data to researchers. The variety in video games allows researchers to explore different psychological sciences and apply them to the player. Video games also contribute to science in a sense that they allow for construction of unrealistic situations.
