Even though the blood always looks the same, there is a difference in what it consists of. We humans do not all have the same blood type.

Blood types are determined by the genes

Our blood types are determined by our DNA. Different blood types are due to different genes. During our evolutionary development, human genes are mutated, which has slowly resulted in changes in our inheritance. Among other things, it has caused different blood types as well.

In the course of human evolution there have been variety of blood types, which do not exist today because the genes have proven to be inappropriate.

In terms of evolution, it has been an advantage that we have different blood types. The more genetic variations there are in a population, the greater the likelihood that we can cope through diseases because it makes us more resistant.

Blood Type Systems

Researchers say that there are 30 different blood types so-called ‘blood-type systems’.

Two blood type systems are the most important in terms of blood transfusions:

  1. The so-called ‘AB0 system’ (called AB zero)
  2. The so-called “Rhesus Blood Type System”

The AB0 system was invented in 1901 by the Austrian Karl Landsteiner and was a groundbreaking discovery.

It is used to categorize all people according to their blood type – the currently known blood types A, B, AB and 0 (zero).

The second system, the Rhesus Blood Type System, was discovered in the years around World War II and is considered by the doctors as the second most important blood type system for blood transfusions.

You inherit the blood type from your parents

The genes you get from your parents determine which type of blood you get. Parents pass on ‘AB0 and Rhesus-type’ genes to the descendants.

The genes that determine A and B are equally dominant, while 0 requires both parents to pass the blood type 0 gene to the child.

For example, if you inherit the gene for blood type A from one parent and the gene for B from the other, you will get blood type AB because A and B are equally strong.

However, if you inherit A from one parent and 0 from another, you will get blood type A because A dominates over 0. However, the dominance does not change the likelihood that you will pass the gene for blood type 0 to your children – it is still 50 percent.

Blood type diet

Recently, a new nutrition concept has emerged, indicating that diets should be planned according to the blood type.

It’s a mess in the sense that there’s no scientific point to say that one’s blood type says something about what to eat.  So we would not recommend following a diet according to your blood type.

Blood types in animals

The different species of animals have different blood types.

Antigens from the human ABO blood type system are also found in monkeys such as chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas, but the blood types are not identical to humans. Therefore, there are no grounds for making blood transfusions between monkeys and humans, as monkeys may also be carriers of different viruses that can be transmitted to humans.

The reason animals have developed different blood types may well be the same as in humans.

Different blood types in different animal species are likely to make the species more resistant to diseases. There are far more blood types among the animals than have been mapped so far.

Dogs accept blood transfusions

In dogs, eight internationally recognized blood types have been found, which are used when dogs need blood transfusions.

Cats, horses, and cows are also available for blood transfusions. In cats there are three different blood types, while horses and cows have eight and eleven different blood types, respectively. And in pigs we know fifteen different blood types.

However, the blood types of birds, fish and reptiles are not categorized until now.
